Summary:

MTN has removed the USSD string previously used to retrieve a SIM card's mobile number. As a result, newly manufactured G-Ultra and G-Speak Ultra devices are no longer able to automatically detect and populate the installed SIM card's mobile number during setup.

This article explains how to manually retrieve the SIM card number and update the device configuration to ensure normal operation.

Process

Step 1: Add an Access Number

  1. Connect to the device using the GWEB website.
  2. Navigate to Access Numbers.
  3. Add your mobile number as an Access Number.
  4. Save the changes.

Step 2: Send the Welcome SMS

  1. Select Send Welcome SMS.
  2. The device will send an SMS from the SIM card installed in the unit to the Access Number you configured.

Note: The sender's number displayed on the received SMS is the SIM number installed in the device.

Step 3: Re-Sync the Device

  1. Initiate a Re-Sync from the physical device 
  2. Confirm that the device has started synchronising successfully.

Step 4: Update the Device Number

  1. Once the Welcome SMS has been received, note the sender's GSM number.
  2. Edit the Device Number field.
  3. Replace the existing value with the GSM number obtained from the Welcome SMS.
  4. Save the changes
